Show full item record
The opening of the medals ceremony commences during the 1909 Wright Brothers Homecoming Celebration held on the morning of Friday June 18, 1909 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. School children are dressed in red, white, and blue and orientated as the United States of America flag waving handkerchiefs. At the end of the singing of the "Star-Spangled Banner", the children pulled out handkerchiefs and waved them in the air so that it would give the illusion of the flag waving in the wind. The image shows a distant view of the stage where the ceremony takes place and the grandstand where the children are sitting. On the far right of the stage, two cornet players from the Heidelberg Celebration Band can be seen playing. On the stage in the front row starting from the left, J. Sprigg McMahon is looking left and Lieutenant Frank P. Lahm, United States Army Signal Corps, is to his left. In order from the center stage are Wilbur, Orville, the Bishop, Milton Wright, the son of Lorin Wright, Lorin Wright, Horace Wright, the son of Lorin Wright, and Reuchlin Wright. The massive crowd witnessing the event can be seen in the foreground.
