| dc.description | Maya Polychromed Cylinder Vase. Guatemala, El Peten area, Late Classic Period, c. 550-950 AD, Ceramic and paint, Height 6 1/4 inches. The Maya named each of their ceramics by type. The cylinder vase was known as "uchiib". The scenes depicted are a series of ceremonies related to warfare and sacrifice, possibly associated with the ball game. The main scene shows six figures, gods or supernaturals, who face a seventh figure, possibly a sacrifice victim. The cartouches on the arms and thighs of five of the figures bear the "god markings". These individuals carry spears, shields, a torch, and the decapitated head of a deer (with the body on the ground below it). The rim is adorned with a band of glyphs. Harold W.
