Maya Standing Male Warrior. Island of Jaina, Campeche, Mexico, Late Classic Period, c. 550-950 AD, Ceramic and paint, Height 11 1/4 inches. This outstanding example of a Maya warrior is adorned with an elaborate headdress with an eagle motif, earplugs, a robe decorated with geometric and scrolling designs and a highly decorative shield with a human face as its centerpiece. Extensive remnants of its original paint provide a glimpse into its colorful original state. Harold W. Shaw Collection at the Dayton Art Institute. |
