Chimu Figural Post. Northern Peru, c. 1100-1400 AD, Wood, Height 44 inches. This well-reserved wood post was used to attach ceremonial or funerary bedding in the tomb of a lord or other important Chimu person. The figure is wearing an elaborate headdress and is adorned with large earspools, a cloak and a necklace. Although carved from wood and buried for more than six centuries, the post's remarkable state of preservation is a result of a very arid climate of coastal Peru. Harold W. Shaw Collection at the Dayton Art Institute. |
