Title: Chimu Beaker, part of the Harold W. Shaw Collection at the Dayton Art Institute
Author: Shaw, Harold W.
Description: Chimu Beaker. Northern Peru, c. 950-1250 AD, Gold, Height 5 1/2 inches. Three standing warrior figures are depicted on this handsome gold beaker. Each is adorned with an elaborate double-tiered headdress and carries a tall staff, probably signifying his rank. There are a few traces of red cinnabar paint on the beaker. Although gold was highly prized, bold objects used in funerary displays were often decorated with this natural red paint. Harold W. Shaw Collection at the Dayton Art Institute.
