Description:

The photograph is of two Wright Flyers flying over the crowd at the Harvard-Boston Aero Meet which was held in Atlantic, Massachusetts from August 26 through September 4, 1911 and was sponsored by the Harvard Aeronautical Society and the Boston Daily Globe. The Wright Flyers flying in the center of the image has a number seven painted on the bottom wing which was the number given to Thomas Sopwith. It is believed that the planes were piloted by George Beatty and Thomas Sopwith. On the ground is a Curtiss aircraft with two men sitting under the wing and a number four on the tail which is the identification number given to Eugene Ely for the meet. On the right side of the image on the ground the tip of a Bleriot monoplane is visible with a number seven painted on it. The image is the same as item number MS338_05_24 which is in the form of a glass lantern slide. |
