The photograph is of Lincoln Beachey seated at the controls of a Curtiss aircraft at the Harvard-Boston Aero Meet. Beachey is wearing an inflated tire inner tube as a life preserver in case he were to crash in the water. The image was taken at the Harvard-Boston Aero Meet which was held in Atlantic, Massachusetts from August 26 through September 4, 1911 and was sponsored by the Harvard Aeronautical Society and the Boston Daily Globe. The image is the same as item number MS338_05_09 which is in the form of a glass lantern slide. |
