Elder abuse is an issue within the healthcare system for nurses. This issue has become increasingly prevalent within the extended care, residential, and nursing home communities. Demographics show a rise in violence towards elders with comorbidities and disabilities. Most abusers are female caregivers, who are overworked, and understaffed. As nurses it is important to be culturally competent and understand our own beliefs regarding elder abuse, or any forms of abuse, in order to effectively recognize, identify, treat, and refer cases of elder abuse. Responding to elder abuse requires the nurse to know whom to contact and the process of referral and documenting to effectively deal with elder abuse occurrences and eliminate recurrences. Research suggests that nurses know how to recognize some types of abuse, however they find the referral process too complicated and do not know the steps in the referral process. Through educating nursing students on the proper referral process and recognition, these issues can begin to be eliminated. This proposal aims to teach nursing students of the various types of elder abuse and the processes in combating elder abuse in a 25-30 slide Power Point presentation. |
