On January 1, 1962, the responsibility for preparing and releasing periodic population estimates for Ohio counties, cities, and villages was transferred to the Department of Industrial and Economic Development from the Department of Health. The first report released in this series following the transfer contained estimates as of January 1, 1962 for counties and cities. This present report contains estimates as of July 1, 1962 for counties, cities, and villages.

These estimates were designed to be consistent with the type of population which would be enumerated in a census. They are for the "resident" population comprising the civilian population and the members of the Armed Forces stationed in the area.
